Barbershop Recruitment Event Planned

In an effort to recruit more male mentors, we will be holding our first barbershop volunteer recruitment event “Grooming Men of the Future” on Saturday, September 28th from 11am – 3pm at three barbershops located in the City of Buffalo. The event is an opportunity for men to stop by in a relaxed & familiar setting to learn more about becoming a Big Brother from Big Brothers Big Sisters fraternity partner Alpha Phi Alpha. The barbershops opening their doors that day to BBBSEC are Styles of Man on East Delavan and the Signature Cutz locations on Main Street and Grant Street. Men who stop down that day will be entered to win a cut from a barber of their choice at each shop and into a grand prize drawing. A big thanks to the fraternity brothers from Alpha Phi Alpha for donating their time to recruit new Bigs and to the local barbershop owners for their support.     A special thank you to the members of Elmwood Kiwanis for sponsoring a special day for 10 of the children involved in BBBSEC at Build A Bear. Each child was able to create a bear of their very own with their Big Brother or Big Sister looking on!   • Our First Thanksgiving

    This year, our holiday program expanded to include Thanksgiving dinner donations. Several of the children in our program live in families that are at or below the poverty line. Thanks to several generous supporters, we were able to provide 13 of those families with their very own Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, dessert and much more. On behalf of the families who were given a fantastic holiday, “Thank You” to our donors: University at Buffalo student group Circle K, Sandy Looker and her Little Sister Lexington, Elmwood Kiwanis, Beth Marcinkowski & Family, Hilbert Office of Multicultural Affairs, BBBSEC Board Member Hedy Moss and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

  • Women Who Move the City Wednesday- Congrats Liz Callahan!

    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County and Media Sponsor Kiss 98.5 are excited to celebrate Liz Callahan as our first 2016 Women Who Move the City Wednesday Honoree! Liz currently serves on the Board of Directors for Journey’s End Refugee Services and WNY STEM Hub. She is on the communications committee for the WNY Women’s Foundation and the event committee for the South Buffalo Community Table’s annual fundraiser and for Startup Grind. Liz also volunteers as a teacher for Junior Achievement of WNY. Previously, Liz was the chair of B Team Buffalo and also served as sponsorship coordinator for TEDx Buffalo from 2012-2015.   • Upgrade to BBBSEC’s Technology

    Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County (BBBSEC) received a grant of $37,950 from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation to upgrade the organization’s outdated technology. Professional case management is critical to creating safe and long-lasting mentoring relationships. This technology upgrade strongly enhances the ability for BBBSEC’s professional case management to support and accurately document these relationships. “We were so very pleased to have the support of the foundation for a request that is very unique for an agency like ours,” shared Thomas Guagliardo, CEO of BBBSEC. “Our organization provides relationship support to hundreds of mentoring matches.
