Alex Dockstader, a Microsoft Channel Specialist at Ingram Micro Inc., exemplifies selflessness and has a strong passion for encouraging others. Weekly she shares her time as a Special Olympics Swim Coach, helping kids improve their swimming skills but also their confidence, drive, and passion. Whether it’s staying after practice to review what was taught that day or providing reassurance and encouragement, Alex is dedicated to her swimmers. Our Bigs & Littles celebrated the start of summer at our Annual Welcome Summer Picnic sponsored by Wegmans. Guests enjoyed dinner and a number of fun activities including carnival games run by volunteers from Ingram Micro. As part of our Pathways to STEM Partnership with National Grid, the kids mixed and measured just the right ingredients to create homemade “silly putty”. Littles also created handmade bookmarks and received new books for summer reading thanks toMichaels and had a chance to explore a fire truck from the Snyder Fire Department. Over 50 Big Brothers and Big Sisters and their Littles celebrated National Thank Your Mentor Day at a dinner, craft and activity night held at the Niagara Frontier American Legion Post. As matches arrived, they had their photos taken and printed. The pictures were then put into frames that our Little Brothers and Sisters created that night as a thank you gift for their mentor. Additionally, our matches enjoyed a terrific dinner by Mr. G’s catering and playing games. Again, a special thanks to all of our Bigs for making a difference and helping the kids in our program reach their full potential!

In an effort to recruit more male mentors, we will be holding our first barbershop volunteer recruitment event “Grooming Men of the Future” on Saturday, September 28th from 11am – 3pm at three barbershops located in the City of Buffalo. The event is an opportunity for men to stop by in a relaxed & familiar setting to learn more about becoming a Big Brother from Big Brothers Big Sisters fraternity partner Alpha Phi Alpha. The barbershops opening their doors that day to BBBSEC are Styles of Man on East Delavan and the Signature Cutz locations on Main Street and Grant Street.
