In conjunction with the celebration of National Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 15th- April 21st), we recognized our volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Board Members at the “Big Appreciation Mixer”. The party was held at the historic Red Cross Mansion. Over 50 Big Brothers and Big Sisters and theirguests will enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres, desserts and drinks. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County is honored to celebrate Marilyn Gibson Young as our first Women Who Move the City Wednesday (WWMTC) Honoree! With a strong commitment to community, Marilyn began volunteering with the Stop the Violence Coalition in 2007 and has served as a Buffalo Peacemaker, Fundraising Committee Member and Vice Chairwoman. With a passion for working youth, and a heart that wanted to see a decrease in youth violence in the City of Buffalo, Marilyn brought together like-minded women over 5 years ago to create W. A.V.E -Women Against Violence Everywhere, an anti-violence organization that takes a proactive approach to help decrease youth violence by way of mentoring programs, events and activities. This summer 34 Little Brothers & Little Sisters attended Tim Horton Children’s Camp Kentahaten in Campbellsville, Kentucky. For almost all of the kids, this 10 day camp was their first time traveling out of state and participating in an array of amazing outdoor activities. Just imagine the fun and memories made in over a week of ropes courses, kayaking, swimming, disc golf and beach volleyball. In addition to the activities, the kids come back excited about the relationships created with their camp counselors and the new friends they have made from around the country! In a joint program with Hasek’s Heroes (a program that provides a monthly skating and educational activity for kids and volunteers), a group of staff members from the Buffalo Sabres gave back in a BIG way by hitting the ice with some of the children that are currently waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. For many of the children participating, this was their first time on ice skates! The Sabres staff helped kids get laced up, out on the ice and spent the evening learning a few moves and having a good time. Following the ice time with their Sabres Staff buddy, the kids enjoyed a pizza party and games. Great time had by all!
