Big Brothers Big Sisters Hosts First Flag Football Event

A group shot of all the participants of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Flag Football Event

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie, Niagara, and the Southern Tier kicked off an exciting new tradition: our inaugural Flag Football Event! Held at the ADPRO Sports Training Center, this event brought together over 30 children from our program and more than 20 enthusiastic volunteers for a day filled with football drills, teamwork, and fun.

A Day of Football and Fun

The event was a great success, with kids participating in various football skill drills before diving into a lively game of flag football. Our dedicated volunteers, including BBBS Bigs, members of the Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and additional community supporters, were on hand to guide, teach, and cheer on the young players. It was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to build confidence, learn new skills, and make new friends.

Community Support and Partnerships

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our local and national partners. NFL Inspire Change and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. played crucial roles in making the day a success. Since 2019, our partnership with NFL Inspire Change has been vital in expanding our mentoring programs nationwide. Additionally, our renewed partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity continues to empower young men of color, promoting leadership and academic excellence.

Raising Awareness for Mentorship

Emily Mahoney, our CEO, highlighted the significance of the event:

“This was a great way to give some of the children in our program a chance to have fun and learn about flag football. Many who attended are currently waiting to be matched with a mentor, so this event allowed them to interact with some great volunteers from the community. We hope this event will help increase awareness about the urgent need for mentors and inspire people in our community to get involved.”

Special Thanks to Our Supporters

  • New Wheels For Summer

A fun summer is ahead for the six Little Brothers and Little Sisters in our program who received brand new bikes on Friday. The bike build and donation was one of several projects completed on Global Volunteer Day by employees of Life Technologies Corporation located on Grand Island. Similar projects were happening at Life Technologies offices across the globe! This is the 4th year that Littles involved in BBBSEC received brand new bikes. The donation was a complete surprise to the Littles. They arrived with their Bigs at Life Technologies thinking they were going to have a tour and learn a bit more about the company. Instead, a new set of wheels awaited them. There were lots of smiles and happy kids! A BIG thanks…

  • Big & Little Give Back

Throughout the year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County (BBBSEC) sees evidence of the positive impact our mentors have on their Littles. With the holidays upon us, there are even more opportunities for our Bigs and Littles to give back together as a team. This year, one match in particular really exhibited the holiday spirit along with precisely what BBBSEC hopes to achieve: Little Brothers and Little Sisters that “pay it forward” and give back to the community themselves. Big Sister Sandy and her Little Sister, Lexington, have been matched for approximately 7 months in our Transforming Buffalo Through Mentoring and Education program- an enhancement to our traditional Community Based Program with an increased focus on academic outcomes for our Littles. In October of…

  • Build A Bear

A special thank you to the members of Elmwood Kiwanis for sponsoring a special day for 10 of the children involved in BBBSEC at Build A Bear. Each child was able to create a bear of their very own with their Big Brother or Big Sister looking on! As you can see from the smiles in the photos, for each Little their new furry friend is already very special. Again, a special thanks to the Elmwood Kiwanis for making this event possible!
