Help “End the Wait” for Children in Need of a Mentor

Currently, there are more than 120 children waiting to be matched with a mentor. To bring attention to their stories and inspire volunteers, we’re launching our new #TheBIGWait social media campaign. Every Wednesday, we’ll call on our supporters to help by highlighting the urgent need for mentors in specific areas.

The campaign will showcase different aspects of the children on our waitlist, from their interests and personalities to the communities where mentors are needed most. Our hope is to encourage individuals in our communities who have considered mentoring in the past to step up and become a Big to one of the many kids who have been waiting for a friend.

    Food & Friendship

    Wegmans Food Markets sponsored 10 matches from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County for a healthy eating/cooking workshop titled “Food & Friendship” at the Sheridan Drive location in Williamsville. The goal of the workshop was to spread the “Eat Well. Live Well.” message in a fun and interactive class. Taught by a trained Wegmans staff member, the workshop was a hands-on experience for the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, ages 6-10, and their mentors. The 90-minute session included a tour of the produce section, trying new fruits and making recipes that could be duplicated in future outings between the child and their Big Brother or Big Sister mentor.     10th Year for the Fore The Children Golf Tournament

    A BIG thanks to all who supported our 10th Annual Fore the Children Golf Tournament presented by PCB Piezotronics at Transit Valley Country Club on Monday, August 25th!  We raised $60k to match more local kids facing adversity with caring mentors! The day started out rainy but the skies cleared in time for our 12:30 pm start.  Attendees enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of golf, contests, food and drinks.  A BIG thanks to our specialty sponsors who helped make the event so special! The day ended with dinner, awards and basket, silent and live auctions.   • Our First Thanksgiving

    This year, our holiday program expanded to include Thanksgiving dinner donations. Several of the children in our program live in families that are at or below the poverty line. Thanks to several generous supporters, we were able to provide 13 of those families with their very own Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, dessert and much more. On behalf of the families who were given a fantastic holiday, “Thank You” to our donors: University at Buffalo student group Circle K, Sandy Looker and her Little Sister Lexington, Elmwood Kiwanis, Beth Marcinkowski & Family, Hilbert Office of Multicultural Affairs, BBBSEC Board Member Hedy Moss and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
