A Future Built on Mentorship

Data from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s national report, “A Future Built on Mentorship,” highlights mentorship as essential infrastructure.

A Future Built on Mentorship

At a time when leaders are talking about workforce shortages, youth mental health, and economic uncertainty,
one truth is becoming clearer:

Mentorship is not a “nice to have.” It is essential infrastructure.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s new national report, A Future Built on Mentorship,
reframes mentorship as a strategic, scalable solution to some of our country’s most pressing challenges.

And the need is real.

One in three young people in America is growing up without access to a mentor.
The informal networks that once supported youth development have weakened, creating a growing gap in the
social infrastructure that helps young people thrive.

Mentorship fills that gap.

What the Data Shows

The research highlights four measurable impacts:

  • Economic mobility.
Mentored youth experience stronger educational outcomes and increased lifetime earnings.
  • Youth well-being.
Consistent relationships improve mental health, belonging, and resilience.
  • Workforce readiness.
Mentorship builds communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills employers need.
  • Access to opportunity.
Mentors expand networks and open doors young people may not otherwise encounter.

This isn’t anecdotal. It’s evidence-backed return on investment.

What This Means for Western New York

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie, Niagara & the Southern Tier, we see this impact every day.

When a Little gains confidence in school.
When a Big introduces a young person to new career possibilities.
When families feel supported instead of isolated.

Mentorship works.

But the gap remains. Hundreds of local youth are waiting for a mentor. Closing that gap requires leadership,
investment, and community commitment.

Mentorship Is an Investment in Our Future

Today’s Littles are tomorrow’s workforce.

If we care about talent pipelines, employee engagement, and long-term economic vitality in Western New York,
we must care about mentorship.

This is upstream investment with downstream impact.

Be Part of Building the Future

The data is clear.
The impact is measurable.
The need is urgent.

Become a Big.
Invest in a match.
Champion mentorship as essential infrastructure in our region.

Because when we build mentorship, we build stronger communities – and a stronger future for us all.

Become a Big
