A Legacy That Still Calls Us to Step Up

More than 50 years after Bob Moss founded Big Brothers Big Sisters in Western New York, his vision continues – inspiring a new generation to answer the call through The BIG Draft.

Sometimes the most powerful movements begin with one person who simply decides to show up.
One person who believes every child deserves guidance, encouragement, and someone firmly in their corner.
In Western New York, that person was Robert “Bob” Moss.

More than five decades ago, Bob founded Big Brothers Big Sisters in our region with a vision rooted in something simple yet powerful: mentorship changes lives.

Courage. Compassion. Belief in potential.
These were the cornerstones of Bob’s work. He didn’t just speak about mentorship – he lived it. Bob walked the walk and talked the talk, helping build a foundation that continues to impact generations of young people today.

That legacy now lives on through his family – Dee, Nicole, and Stephen Moss — who continue to carry his vision forward, ensuring that children across Western New York have the support, guidance, and encouragement they need to thrive.

In recognition of a lifetime of leadership, service, and love for this community, we were proud to honor the Moss Family with the 2025 Distinguished Service Award.

Recently, we sat down with the family to reflect on Bob’s legacy and share the story behind the mission that continues to shape Big Brothers Big Sisters in Western New York today.

Bob Moss started something extraordinary more than 50 years ago – and today, we’re still calling on our community to step up.

Right now, children across Western New York are waiting for someone to believe in them.

Suit up. Step up. Be a Big.
