From Little to Leader: Milan’s BIG Journey to UB

From Little to Leader: Milan’s BIG Journey to UB

After eight years of mentorship, resilience, and support, Milan graduated from high school this spring and is now preparing for her next chapter at the University at Buffalo – a powerful reminder of what can happen when a young person has someone in their corner.

This spring, Milan achieved a milestone years in the making: graduating from high school and earning scholarship support that will cover most of her tuition at the University at Buffalo.

Her dream is to become a doctor, and those closest to her know just how hard she has worked to reach this moment.

For the past eight years, Milan has been matched with her Big, Elizabeth. What began as a mentoring relationship grew into a lasting bond built on trust, encouragement, consistency, and friendship.

Watch Milan and Elizabeth share their story:

Like many young people, Milan faced challenges along the way. Through it all, Elizabeth remained a steady source of support, guidance, and positivity. Their journey is a powerful example of how mentorship can shape a young person’s future — not just in a single moment, but over the course of many years.

Milan’s mother recently shared that all three of her children have participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, describing their mentors as “a true blessing,” especially during times when support and encouragement were needed most.

As we celebrate Milan’s achievement, her story reminds us that success is rarely accomplished alone. Behind every milestone is a network of people who believe in us, encourage us, and help us see what is possible.

For Milan, Elizabeth has been one of those people.

Today, Milan is looking ahead to her future at the University at Buffalo. And while her next chapter is just beginning, her story already stands as a testament to the life-changing power of mentorship.

Congratulations, Milan. We are incredibly proud of all you have accomplished and can’t wait to see what comes next.

And thank you, Elizabeth, for eight years of friendship, encouragement, and BIG impact.
