Native American Heritage Month Resources
November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich histories, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. In New York State, we recognize eight federally acknowledged tribes, many of whom belong to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, also known as the “People of the Longhouse.” Their symbol, the Hiawatha Belt, embodies a legacy of peace among five of the six nations.
From the invention of lacrosse to place names like Manhattan, Indigenous cultures have left an enduring mark on our land and history.
