We are excited to share that results from the end of the 2014-2015 school year show that 98.9% of children involved the agency’s mentoring programs were promoted to the next grade level. In addition, 84% of children had a more positive attitude towards school and 96% had improved self-confidence. These results hold true for children attending Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) who are enrolled in BBBSEC’s innovative program, Transforming Buffalo Through Mentoring & Education™ (TBTME). Students enrolled in TBTME™ demonstrated improvements in attendance and a reduction in discipline referrals. These results lead to improved academic performance and a better chance for future success.

Other positive outcomes from the 2014-2015 school year for children enrolled in BBBSEC’s Transforming Buffalo Through Mentoring & Education™ include:

  • Attendance records showed that compared to all students in the BPS District, a greater percentage of children in BBBSEC’s program had satisfactory attendance (absent 8 days or less) and a significantly smaller percentage of children in the program were described as chronically absent.
  • 72% of children who have been matched with a mentor in the program for two school years decreased the number of discipline referrals they received, compared to the previous year, or did not receive any discipline referrals at all.
  • Over half of the children in the program maintained or increased their grade averages in Math, Science, English/Language Arts and Social Studies between the 1st and 4th
  • For children in the program who have been matched for two school years or longer, 36% of children increased their final overall average from the previous school year.

Funding for Transforming Buffalo Through Mentoring & Education™ is a collaborative effort among several local corporations, foundations and organizations. Thank You General Mills!

A BIG thanks to the General Mills Foundation & the employees involved in the Buffalo Community Action Council for the generous grant of $5,000 for our Site Based Mentoring Program (SBM).  In addition to support as a funding partner, we’ve rom General Mills host activities for the children and mentors in our program. Recently, our kids enjoyed two wonderful opportunities with the General Mills in the Community volunteers.  A group hosted an afternoon of fun activities with the kids in the SBM program at Enterprise Charter School. Events included building marshmallow catapults and then playing a game to try to catch the flying marshmallows. The kids had a blast using math/science skills and of course, shooting marshmallows! Ford Friendship for BBBSEC Friendships!

BBBSEC received a donation of a Ford Flex through the Friendship Express program provided by the Ford Dealers of WNY. The vehicle will be used to transport groups of boys in our Partners for Youth program to different activities and events. Additionally, we will use it for small group outings for matches in our Site-Based and Community-Based programs. Thank you to the Ford Dealers of WNY for helping us broaden the horizons of our kids with a new set of wheels!

BBBS teams up with Kohl’s for a “Go Green Project”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County (BBBSEC) teamed up with the five local Kohl’s Department Stores for Kohl’s National Go Green Event (NGG) in celebration of National Volunteer Week and Earth Day. On Sunday, May 1st, more than 40 Kohl’s associates participated in a one-day volunteer project at The Belle Center located on Buffalo’s Lower West Side.  The Kohl’s associates spread soil, planted bushes and flowers at the center.  Several BBBS staff and a Big Brother & Little Brother match joined the effort. Following their hard work, the group enjoyed lunch and the opportunity to view the changes they made to the outside appearance of the center.  A grant will be awarded to BBBSEC’s Site-Based Mentoring Program located at The Belle Center  in recognition…
